Both Au Pair and host family should meet on a regular basis to discuss tasks and routines. This should happen initially and later when an au pair starts to understand the family requirements this meeting can continue to happen less often. This will keep both clear on each others needs and problems.
It is important that the host family schedules a time table of the work that needs to be done by the au pair. Every task should be written down in the contract and clearly explained to the au pair.
“Breakfast between 7 – 7:30 am” “Fold clothes that are spread all over and assemble them in wardrobe” “Daily cleaning of child room” “Weekly vacuuming” etc.
Free time should also be mentioned in timetable. The host family needs to respect this time and make sure that the au pair finds the time to visit a language course.
